COVID-19 in Lee County: State reports five new coronavirus deaths, 135 more cases

The Florida Department of Health reported an additional five COVID-19 related deaths and 135 new cases for Lee County Saturday.

The most recent fatalities bring the total of Lee residents who have died of COVID-19 complications to 300. It took 18 just days for the county to go from 200 reported deaths to 300. In comparison, it took 47 days for Lee to increase from 100 to 200 (May 28-July 14) and 73 days for the county to reach 100 (March 16-May 28).

The state released the following details on the five new Lee resident deaths:

  • A 40-year-old man whose positive case was counted by the state on June 6.
  • A 76-year-old woman who had contact with a known case (Counted June 21).
  • A 45-year-old man (Counted July 2).
  • A 79-year-old woman (Counted July 10).
  • An 82-year-old man (Counted July 21).

The 135 COVID-19 cases reported Saturday marked the 39th consecutive day Lee has recorded at least 100 cases. However, Lee's seven-day case average dropped to 181, its lowest since June 24.

Lee's overall positivity rate increased slightly to 14.31% Saturday. The seven-day average percentage of people testing positive for COVID-19 also increased a bit to 9.42%.

According to the state Department of Health, a total of 981 people in Lee County have been hospitalized for COVID-19 as of Saturday, but that number does not reflect people currently in the hospital, according to the state.

As of approximately 11 a.m. Saturday, there were 211 COVID-19 patients in Lee County hospitals, according to data from Florida's Agency for Healthcare Administration. That's 57 more patients than were reported at approximately the same time Friday.  The county also had 21% of its total hospital beds available and 17.7% of its adult ICU beds available, according to the AHCA. Florida's available percentages were 24.9% (hospital beds) and 17.9% (ICU beds), respectively.

The Florida Department of Health is not reporting how many people have recovered from COVID-19.
