LCSO announces suspects in Lani Kai homicide, one in custody on unrelated charges

More than two weeks after a shooting at Lani Kai Island Resort in Fort Myers that killed one man, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office now has several suspects, including one in custody on unrelated charges.

LCSO said Saturday that the homicide was believed to be a targeted, isolated incident and declined to provide further information due to the case’s active status.

Just after midnight on July 15, three people were shot, leaving one man dead and two others with non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooting happened after an altercation between a group of people behind the resort, Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said in mid-July.

Florida’s coronavirus cases tripled in July and deaths nearly doubled. What comes next?

July is coming to a close in Florida with three times more coronavirus cases than when the month began and nearly twice as many COVID-19 deaths, marking an alarming escalation in the state’s outbreak.

It was a month that transformed Florida into one of the worst virus hotspots on the globe, putting the state at the center of the debate over how to balance economic and public health.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has been among the least restrictive leaders of a major state or country, eschewing a mask requirement and allowing every business except bars to remain open. His approach largely has been to try to ride out the pandemic with minimal public health mandates.

“I think what we’ve seen is that the virus is in charge,” said...

‘Very much in flux’: With Hurricane Isaias set to scrape Florida, DeSantis says state is ready

At a briefing in the state’s Emergency Operations Center, the governor said the state is well-prepared for the storm. He said President Donald Trump approved his request for a federal disaster declaration, so the federal government will reimburse the state for costs of the storm, and a dozen counties have issued their own emergency declarations for citizens to be ready if evacuation becomes necessary.

Southwest Florida virtual job fair provides ‘visibility’, sees high demand during coronavirus pandemic

With the country tumbling into a coronavirus-fueled recession, many Americans are searching for employment.

To answer this issue, virtual career fairs have popped up with the hopes of filling needs for job seekers and employers in a safe environment. The pandemic has posed challenges in connecting with companies as the job-searching process has traditionally relied on in-person interactions.

CareerSource Southwest Florida held one of these virtual fairs on Thursday, the same day the U.S. economy’s worst contraction on record was reported.

The need for such an event has proven to be high in the region.

In June, the unemployment rate dropped to a still-high 9.7% from 12...
